Old houses need a slower cleaner
Around The Green and up towards Grange Park the houses are Victorian and Edwardian villas with the original features still in place: cornicing, ceiling roses, stripped floorboards, cast-iron radiators, marble and slate fire surrounds, stained glass in the front door.
Every one of those is a thing that can be damaged by the wrong product. Limescale remover etches marble. A scouring pad kills the finish on a cast-iron radiator. The wrong pH strips wax from old boards. None of this is exotic knowledge — it is simply the difference between a cleaner who has worked in these houses and one who has not, and it is why we walk round a house like this before quoting rather than pricing it by bedroom count over the phone.
Wool carpets, and why they are not cleaned like the rest
Period houses in N21 tend to have wool carpet and older upholstery, and wool is not polypropylene. It needs a different solution, a lower temperature and a controlled pH, or it browns, shrinks or loses colour — and unlike a stain, that damage does not come out.
So our carpet work starts by identifying the fibre and testing colour-fastness in a hidden corner. On a modern flat that step is a formality. Here it is the whole job. We also give an honest drying time: four to eight hours normally, and up to a day for a thick wool pile in cold weather.
Long arrangements, quietly kept

Is hot-water extraction safe on a wool carpet?
Yes, with the right solution, temperature and pH — and not otherwise. We identify the fibre and test colour-fastness in a hidden corner before starting. Wool that has been cleaned as though it were synthetic can brown or shrink, and that does not come back.
How long will a wool carpet take to dry?
Four to eight hours in normal conditions, up to a day for a thick pile in cold weather. Windows open and heating on roughly halves it. Do not put rugs or furniture back on top before it is dry.
