Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning

Most carpets that look worn out are not worn out. They are holding years of soil below the surface, where a vacuum has never reached and a shampoo machine only pushed it deeper.

Hot-water extraction, not shampoo

Two things get called carpet cleaning and they are not the same. Shampooing works detergent into the pile and relies on vacuuming to take it out again. Some always stays, and detergent left in a carpet is sticky — which is why a shampooed carpet often looks worse two months later than it did before.

Hot-water extraction injects hot solution into the pile and pulls it straight back out under vacuum, carrying the soil with it. It is what the trade calls steam cleaning, though no steam is involved, and it is the method almost every carpet manufacturer specifies in its own care guidance.

Before any of that, the carpet is vacuumed properly and the traffic lanes and spots are pre-treated. The pre-treatment does most of the actual work; skipping it is how a job ends up merely damp rather than clean.

Drying time, told honestly

Expect four to eight hours before a carpet is ready for normal use, and up to a day for a thick wool pile in cold weather. Anyone promising an hour is either under-wetting the carpet or over-promising to you.

You can walk on it before then in clean socks. What you should not do is put furniture back or lay rugs on top, because that traps the moisture underneath. We move furniture back with protectors where it needs to go back straight away.

Ventilation halves the time. Windows open and heating on beats any fan we could bring.

Before we start

  • Fibre identified — wool and viscose are not cleaned like polypropylene
  • Colour-fastness tested in a hidden corner
  • Spots and traffic lanes pre-treated
  • Moveable furniture lifted; heavy items worked around
  • We tell you what will not come out before we begin, not after

When your tenancy agreement asks for it in writing

Plenty of tenancy agreements require carpets to be professionally cleaned at the end of the term, and require an invoice as proof. If that is why you are here, book it alongside your end of tenancy clean and we will do both on the same visit — carpets last, so the drying time starts as we leave.

Tell us at the booking stage rather than on the day. The order of work changes, and so does how long the property needs before the check-out appointment.

What comes out, and what does not

Usually removable: general soil and traffic lanes, food and drink, mud, most pet accidents, and the greasy grey shading around doorways that people mistake for wear.

Often improved but not guaranteed: red wine, coffee and tea, ink, and old pet stains that have reached the underlay — where the smell lives in the backing rather than the pile.

Permanent, whoever cleans it: bleach and household-chemical damage, sun fading, dye loss, and cigarette burns. In those cases the fibre itself has changed colour; there is nothing left to lift out. We will say so when we look at it rather than take your money and disappoint you.

Questions we are asked most

How long does the carpet take to dry?

Four to eight hours in normal conditions, up to a day for thick wool in cold weather. Open windows and heating on will roughly halve it. You can walk on it in clean socks before then; just do not put furniture or rugs back on top.

Do you move the furniture?

We move what can be moved safely and work around what cannot — wardrobes, beds and heavy units. If you want everything cleaned underneath, clear the room beforehand and the result is better.

Will it get rid of pet smell?

Often, yes, when the problem is in the pile. When urine has reached the underlay the smell is in the backing and the floor beneath, and cleaning the surface only masks it for a few weeks. We will tell you which one you have before starting.

Is it safe for wool?

Yes, with the right solution, temperature and pH. Wool and viscose are not treated like synthetic fibre. We identify the fibre and test for colour-fastness in a hidden corner before anything else happens.

Can you guarantee a stain will come out?

No, and nobody honest will. Some marks are dye loss or bleach damage, which means the fibre has changed colour permanently. We will tell you what we expect to shift before we start.

Can you do it on the same visit as an end of tenancy clean?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. Carpets go last so the drying starts as we leave. Mention it when you book so we plan the day and the drying time around the check-out appointment.
